How to Attract Hummingbirds

TIPS FOR HUMMINGBIRD SEASON...

Hummingbirds can be attracted to your backyard with just a little planning. The same four elements that attract most birds - food, water, shelter, and places to raise young - will attract hummingbirds.

PROVIDE A HUMMINGBIRD FEEDER...
The best method to attract hummingbirds is to place a hummingbird feeder filled with a sugar-water solution in your flower garden. Hang your feeder in the shade, (or purchase one of our weather domes for $29.99) protected from the wind, and near some perching sites. Hummingbirds are bold little creatures, so don't be shy about hanging the feeder close where you can see it.

We recommend using our Wild Birds Unlimited High Perch Hummingbird Feeders to attract the most hummingbirds to your yard. Designed to appeal to hummingbirds, this feeder allows them to hover or perch while feeding. It does not leak. Bees can’t access the nectar solution, and the built-in ant moat deters ants. The feeder is easy to clean, and the nectar solution recipe is printed under the lid. Lifetime guarantee. Available in 4,8,12, and/or 16 ounce feeders.

Based on our standard feeder, the Wild Birds Unlimited Decorative Window Hummingbird Feeder brings the birds in for closer views. Watch their tongues lap up the food, darting in and out of the nectar solution up to 12 times per second. It is the only window hummingbird feeder that contains an ant moat. Lifetime guarantee.

HAVE PLANTS THAT WILL ATTRACT HUMMINGBIRDS...
Hummingbirds are attracted to a wide variety of flowers, choose a variety of plants that will bloom at the times when hummingbirds may visit. Here are a few examples: Black & Blue Salvia, Columbine, Fuchsia, Bee balm, Impatiens, Lantana, Petunia, and Coral Honeysuckle.

PROVIDE WATER...
Hummingbirds are attracted to water misters. They love to dart back and forth through the stream of mist to bathe or take a drink.

TO PREPARE THE NECTAR SOLUTION...
Add 1/4 cup of white table sugar to one cup of boiled water, and or hot water from tap, allow the nectar solution to cool before filling your feeder, for your convenience , we sell Wild Birds Unlimited Hummingbird and Oriole(boxed) nectar is available along with our Nectar Bottles for easy storage in your refrigerator. Only feed Hummingbirds Nectar! Do not substitute honey for the sugar. Raw, organic, turbinado, and brown sugar are harmful to hummingbirds. You should only make your hummingbird nectar with granulated white sugar. Cane sugar is preferable, but beet sugar is also acceptable. Don't use confectioner's sugar either, as it contains an anti-caking agent. Do not add any dye or coloring to the mixture, the color of the feeder will attract the hummingbirds.

OTHER TIPS...Offer our Wild Birds Unlimited Nectar, or mix up your own water and sugar (4:1 ratio). Clean nectar feeders twice a week; then fill with fresh nectar solution. Use the Wild Birds Unlimited Nectar Port Brush to keep your feeder clean and presentable for hummingbirds. Use our WBU nectar guard tips to keep bees and bugs out.  Keep ants out of non-WBU nectar feeders with our Trap-It Ant Moat or Ant-guard Plus repellent available in our store.
